Develop the clinical knowledge, diagnostic skills and experience needed to care for patients across the full spectrum of neurological disease. The St. Joseph’s Medical Center Neurology Residency Program is a four-year, ACGME-accredited categorical program offering comprehensive inpatient, outpatient and subspecialty training.

Residents train at St. Joseph’s Medical Center and affiliated clinical sites in Stockton and Sacramento, caring for a culturally and socioeconomically diverse patient population. Experiences include inpatient neurological consultation and admitting services, longitudinal continuity clinic, neurocritical care, child neurology, vascular neurology, epilepsy, clinical neurophysiology and other neurological subspecialties.
Through progressive clinical responsibility, close faculty mentorship, scholarly activity and collaboration with regional academic partners, residents prepare for independent neurological practice or advanced fellowship training.
Message from the Program Director
Welcome to the St. Joseph’s Medical Center Neurology Residency Program. Our four-year categorical program provides comprehensive training designed to prepare residents for independent neurological practice or advanced fellowship training.
Residents train primarily at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, with additional experiences at Touro University Medical Group, UC Davis Medical Center and San Joaquin General Hospital. Through inpatient, outpatient, procedural and subspecialty experiences, residents develop broad clinical expertise supported by grand rounds, simulation, case conferences, journal clubs and board preparation.
As program director, my goal is for residents who train here to get a world-class education, be genuinely rooted in the community they serve, and have a real say in shaping the training program. Our priority is building a culture of equity, transparency, trust, and a shared sense of ownership among our residents and faculty.
The San Joaquin Valley includes many communities that experience barriers to neurological care. Our residents encounter a broad range of conditions while making a meaningful contribution to the patients and communities we serve. We view our program as one way to expand access to care and strengthen the region’s physician workforce.

Program Director, Neurology Residency Program
The St. Joseph’s Medical Center Neurology Residency Program is a four-year categorical program consisting of 48 months of training. Residents begin with a broad clinical foundation during PGY-1, followed by 36 months of progressively advanced neurology education.
Each academic year is organized into 13 four-week blocks. Specific rotation schedules may change based on educational needs and clinical-site availability.
Residents participate in grand rounds and didactics with the UC Davis Department of Neurology, along with locally led simulation exercises, case conferences, neuroradiology rounds and journal clubs. The curriculum also includes preparation for board certification and the Residency In-Service Training Examination.
A longitudinal outpatient continuity clinic begins during PGY-2 and continues through PGY-4. Residents develop long-term relationships with patients while gaining experience in the evaluation and management of a broad range of neurological conditions.
Residents gain experience with neurological procedures, including electroencephalography, electromyography, nerve conduction studies and botulinum toxin administration for conditions such as migraine, spasticity and movement disorders.
Dedicated research time during PGY-4 allows residents to pursue scholarly interests, work with faculty mentors and develop skills that support academic inquiry and lifelong learning.
Residents assume increasing responsibility as their knowledge, clinical judgment and skills develop. Faculty provide graded supervision, regular feedback and opportunities for residents to teach medical students and other trainees.
Residents train across inpatient, outpatient and academic medical center settings in Stockton, French Camp and Sacramento.

Chief resident stipend: $2,000 annually

Relocation bonus: $1,500 for residents moving more than 50 miles; available during the first year only

Selection considerations
The program considers applicants’ academic qualifications, clinical experience, leadership abilities, communication skills, professionalism, dependability and work ethic. U.S. clinical experience is considered, and applicants with ties to California’s Central Valley receive strong consideration.
International medical graduates
The program does not independently sponsor visas. Applicants with a J-1 visa may be considered when the visa is sponsored through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
