The St. Joseph’s Medical Center Psychiatry Residency Program provides comprehensive, four-year training across inpatient, outpatient and subspecialty psychiatric care. Residents develop the clinical knowledge, judgment and compassion needed to care for patients from a wide range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
As part of Dignity Health, St. Joseph’s Medical Center is a member of CommonSpirit Health’s national network of more than 2,200 care sites across 24 states. That broad perspective supports our local commitment to community-based training, health equity and compassionate care.
Residents train at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Behavioral Health Center, Napa State Hospital, Touro University Medical Group and the VA Northern California Health Care System. These experiences provide exposure to general adult, consultation-liaison, child and adolescent, geriatric, forensic and addiction psychiatry.
Through structured didactics, psychotherapy education, research and quality improvement opportunities, progressive responsibility and dedicated faculty mentorship, residents prepare for independent practice or advanced fellowship training.
Message from the Program Director
Welcome to the Psychiatry Residency Program at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton, CA! I am proud to introduce our program, which welcomed its inaugural class in 2021 and has grown steadily since then.
We are a community-based program, developed in partnership with Napa State Hospital, one of the oldest state hospitals in California. Our mission is to train psychiatrists who provide the highest quality of care for the medically and psychiatrically under-served, under-insured, and culturally diverse communities of Northern California, including San Joaquin County, California Department of State Hospitals, and the VA Northern California Healthcare System. Our primary training sites include St. Joseph's Medical Center, St. Joseph's Behavioral Health Center, Napa State Hospital, Touro University Medical Group and the VA Northern California Healthcare System. Residents receive comprehensive training in all aspects of psychiatry across a variety of clinical settings, and learn to care for a diverse group of patients with varied socioeconomic backgrounds.
We have an expanding team of dedicated faculty with extensive clinical experience, and diverse academic and personal backgrounds. Most of our core faculty have sub-specialty training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, and Addiction Psychiatry. They provide outstanding supervision and education to our residents, blending evidence-based medicine with the art of psychiatry, along with a rich and engaging didactic curriculum.
Additionally, the research divisions at St. Joseph's Medical Center and Napa State Hospital are committed to promoting scholarly activity and quality improvement. Residents have extensive opportunities to engage in research and scholarly projects, working closely with supportive faculty to explore and develop their individual interests.
I joined the program as Core Faculty and Assistant Program Director in 2023 and have found it incredibly rewarding to be part of such a passionate and supportive community. In 2025, I had the immense honor of stepping into the role of Program Director. My own path in psychiatry has always been shaped by a deep commitment to service and mentorship. What inspires me most about this field is the privilege of walking alongside patients during their most vulnerable moments, and helping our residents learn to do the same with skill and compassion.

The St. Joseph’s Medical Center Psychiatry Residency Program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare residents for independent psychiatric practice or advanced fellowship training. Each training year consists of 13 four-week blocks, with experiences that build progressively across inpatient, outpatient and subspecialty care.
First-year residents establish a strong foundation in psychiatry and general medicine through rotations in:
Second-year residents expand their psychiatric knowledge and clinical responsibility through experiences in:
Third-year residents focus on outpatient psychiatry at Touro University Medical Group and the VA Northern California Health Care System. These longitudinal experiences support the development of patient relationships, psychotherapy skills and comprehensive treatment planning.
Fourth-year residents assume greater responsibility through a junior attending model, with core experiences in inpatient, consultation-liaison and outpatient psychiatry. Residents also complete electives and continue longitudinal outpatient training with the VA Northern California Health Care System.
Residents participate in protected didactic sessions every Thursday afternoon. The curriculum covers psychopathology, psychopharmacology, child and adolescent psychiatry, consultation-liaison psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, research and quality improvement.
PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents complete a structured psychopharmacology series. During PGY-3 and PGY-4, focused lectures reinforce and expand this knowledge within the broader didactic curriculum.
The program offers a comprehensive two-year curriculum in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Weekly lectures and ongoing case consultation help residents develop both a theoretical foundation and practical experience applying psychodynamic principles to patient care.
Senior residents receive additional education in specialized areas such as interventional psychiatry, integrative psychiatry and neuropsychology.
Journal clubs, case conferences and structured Psychiatry Resident In-Training Examination (PRITE) and American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) review sessions strengthen clinical knowledge, critical thinking and exam readiness.
Residents participate in a protected monthly process group that supports reflection, connection and well-being throughout training.
Residents train across hospital, outpatient, state psychiatric hospital and Veterans Affairs settings throughout Northern California.
