The St. Joseph’s Medical Center Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program is a specialized training experience that prepares fellows for full-spectrum child and adolescent psychiatric care in the Central Valley. As part of Dignity Health, we are a member of CommonSpirit Health's national network of more than 2,200 care sites across 24 states. That broad perspective supports our local commitment to community-based training, health equity and compassionate care. Fellows train at St. Joseph’s Medical Center and various clinical sites, serving an ethnically, culturally, and socio-economically diverse patient population. Upon graduation, fellows are prepared to competently and compassionately practice child and adolescent psychiatry, particularly in mental health professional shortage areas.

Larry Suess, DO, PhD, FACN Program Director
The curriculum is designed to provide comprehensive training across various inpatient and outpatient settings, emphasizing a strong clinical understanding of developmental contexts, family systems, and social justice. Training sites offer diverse psychopathology to ensure a rich learning experience.
Foundational training includes six blocks of outpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry clinic, two blocks of inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, one block each of Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Consultation Liaison, School Psychiatry, and Forensic Child Psychiatry, and one elective block.
Expanded clinical responsibility involves five blocks of outpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry clinic, two blocks of inpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, one block each of Addiction Psychiatry, Sleep Medicine, Intellectual Development, and Community Psychiatry, and two elective blocks.
Fellows have opportunities for elective blocks in both their first and second years, allowing for exploration of specific areas of interest within child and adolescent psychiatry.
Training occurs at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Stockton, California, and includes rotations at partner institutions in the surrounding area.

Fellows rotate at San Joaquin General Hospital, the licensed adult trauma center for San Joaquin County, gaining exposure to a high volume of trauma cases.
Residents are eligible for benefits beginning on their first day of hire.
For the 2026-2027 academic year, annual resident salaries are:
Fellow 1: $90,793.77
Chief resident: $87,500.67
Medical plan premiums paid in full for residents, with low-cost coverage for enrolled dependents

Life and AD&D insurance (1x annual salary), with optional additional coverage

Stockton, CA, is a historic gold rush port city on the banks of the mighty San Joaquin River, offering a diverse community and convenient access to popular Northern California destinations. It is a 60-minute drive to the San Francisco Bay Area and a 90-minute drive to the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Application Process
The two-year Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program received Initial Accreditation in April 2025. Applicants must have completed at least three years of a domestic ACGME-accredited Psychiatry Residency Program.
