The St. Joseph's Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency program is a community-based training experience for internal medicine in Stockton, California.
As part of Dignity Health, the organization is a member of CommonSpirit Health's national network of more than 2,200 care sites across 24 states. This network supports community-based training, health equity and compassionate care.
The 355-bed facility, with its Morrissey Family Heart & Vascular Institute and accredited cancer facility, serves a diverse, high-volume patient population.
Residents gain clinical skills in inpatient and outpatient medicine, including intensive care unit and subspecialty rotations, preparing them for practice or fellowships.
It is my privilege to lead a program dedicated to training compassionate, well-rounded Internal Medicine physicians with exceptional clinical skills. Our curriculum provides broad exposure to inpatient and outpatient medicine, including intensive ICU rotations and a wide range of subspecialty experiences. Residents engage in scholarly activity and research, shaping evidence-based practices. Education is enhanced through interactive morning reports, weekly didactics, journal clubs and simulation training, preparing them for general Internal Medicine or fellowship.
Our commitment to community engagement is a cornerstone. Residents mentor students and participate in outreach, collaborating with local organizations to enhance cultural competency.

Welcome to the Internal Medicine Residency Curriculum at our program. Below you'll find an overview of the structured educational experiences designed to support resident learning, clinical reasoning and professional growth.
PGY-1 residents gain foundational training across core areas including Inpatient Cardiology, Critical Care Medicine, Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, Inpatient Medicine, Nephrology, Inpatient Medicine Night Float and Pulmonology, plus 4 weeks of Individualized Educational Experience.
PGY-2 residents expand clinical responsibility in areas such as Ambulatory Rotation/Addiction Medicine, Outpatient Cardiology, Inpatient Medicine, Research, Critical Care Medicine, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Inpatient Medicine and Critical Care Medicine Night Float and Rheumatology, plus 8 weeks of Individualized Educational Experience.
PGY-3 residents focus on independent practice preparation, with rotations in Critical Care Medicine, Geriatrics, Inpatient Medicine, Palliative Medicine, Research, Emergency Medicine, Hematology-Oncology, plus 12 weeks of Individualized Educational Experience.
Morning Report takes place twice weekly, focusing on diagnostic dilemmas and interesting cases. Weekly afternoon Didactics cover MKSAP/ACP board prep, SIM training, POCUS training, outpatient topics, and wellness discussions, spanning key specialties. Monthly Grand Rounds and Morbidity & Mortality Conferences further enhance learning and quality improvement. Resident-driven, faculty-guided monthly journal clubs that sharpen critical appraisal and evidence-based practice.
Simulation training, including procedural simulations and rapid response team (RRT) simulations, is integrated into each block. Residents also regularly sharpen their Code Blue and resuscitation skills. Procedural sessions are overseen by EM attending with support from the simulation team.
Residents actively engage in scholarly activity and research, helping to shape evidence-based practices and improve patient outcomes. Each resident participates in at least one quality improvement initiative each academic year. Residents showcase their scholarly activity at GME’s Spring and Fall Research symposium.
With 6 full months of dedicated electives spread across all three years (PGY-1 to PGY-3), residents have the flexibility to explore subspecialties, build competitive fellowship profiles and align training directly with their long-term career goals. Some of the rotation choices are POCUS, SIM, Medical Spanish, Lifestyle Medicine Curriculum, Sleep Medicine, Research, Hospitalist , Clinical Informatics, Pharmacology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Toxicology in addition to common Internal medicine subspecialities.
Our residents actively give back through three impactful community initiatives: mentoring high school students from underrepresented backgrounds via the San Joaquin Medical Society’s Decision Medicine program, inspiring young minds through the ABIM grant-funded McKinley Elementary 4th Grade Project and advancing cultural competency by partnering with local organizations like APSARA and El Concilio.
