The Mercy San Juan Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program is an innovative training experience designed to cultivate clinically excellent, compassionate, and well-rounded internists who will lead the future of healthcare. As part of Dignity Health, we are a member of CommonSpirit Health's national network of more than 2,200 care sites across 24 states. That broad perspective supports our local commitment to community-based training, health equity and compassionate care. Located in Carmichael, California, Mercy San Juan Medical Center is a 385-bed, Level II Trauma Center, serving as a regional referral hub. We partner with Dignity Health Medical Foundation to deliver comprehensive primary and specialty care to the local community. Residents will graduate feeling confident, well trained, and ready to make an impact in hospital medicine, outpatient practice, or competitive subspecialty fellowships.

Curriculum
The program offers a robust and diverse clinical curriculum, balancing high-acuity inpatient medicine with comprehensive ambulatory care across 13 four-week blocks per year.

Expanded clinical responsibility
Expanded clinical responsibility covers intensive care unit, internal medicine wards, emergency medicine, night float, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, rheumatology, pulmonology, pain medicine, geriatrics, and elective rotations.
PGY-3:
Independent practice preparation
Independent practice preparation focuses on intensive care unit, internal medicine wards, emergency medicine, night float, hematology/oncology, palliative medicine, and six blocks of electives, alongside dedicated research time.

Didactics and protected education time
The program integrates cutting-edge medical education through collaboration with a state-of-the-art Clinical Learning Center, providing high-fidelity simulation training, procedural workshops, and crisis management scenarios.
Electives
Residents have elective blocks in PGY-2 and PGY-3 to explore various disciplines and tailor their training to their career interests, whether in primary care, hospital medicine, or fellowship training.
Scholarly activity and quality improvement
The program fosters a culture of lifelong learning and scholarly activity, encouraging participation in research, quality improvement projects, and presentations at national conferences. PGY-3 includes dedicated research time.

Compensation and Benefits
Residents are eligible for benefits beginning on their first day of hire.
Salary
PGY-1: $82,015.50
PGY-2: $86,498.80
PGY-3: $90,522.00
Chief Residents: $94,039.09
CME allowance: $1,500 annually
Relocation bonus: $1,500 for residents moving more than 50 miles; available during the first year only

How to Apply
Application Process
Application to the Internal Medicine Residency Program must be made through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), utilizing Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).
Required application materials:
- Personal Statement
- Current CV
- Dean’s letter from US graduates
- ECFMG from international medical school graduates
- ECFMG Certification (required prior to application unless recommendations to honor the five ECFMG pathways are promoted again)
- Medical school transcripts
- Letters of Recommendation (Total 3 letters, including at least 2 from Internal Medicine or subspecialty faculty)
- Graduation from an approved medical school determined by using the California Medical Board’s list of recognized schools
- USMLE or COMLEX Level 1 and Step 2-CK/COMLEX Level 2-CE results
ECFMG Certification is required prior to application unless recommendations to honor the five ECFMG pathways are promoted again. Applicants must be graduates from an approved medical school determined by using the California Medical Board’s list of recognized schools.
